A car that caught fire blocked both eastbound bores of the Caldecott Tunnel for about an hour Monday, the California Highway Patrol said.
The two tunnel bores on Highway 24 remained closed to traffic through noon, about 35 minutes after the first reports of the smoking car were made to the CHP at 11:24 a.m.
Crews opened one of the bores just before 12:15 p.m., and the second one about 15 minutes later.
Initial reports indicated that one car was fully engulfed in flames, but that the driver got out and that another driver took him out of the tunnel. The CHP could not confirm those reports immediately, and there was no word on whether anybody was injured.
