Education Minister David Eggen announced the banning of seclusion rooms in schools on Friday, March 1, 2019. The decision will come into effect on Sept. 1 for the 2019-2020 school year.Eggen is asking school boards to submit a list of schools with a seclusion room which will need to be decommissioned by Aug. 31. Alberta Education will then inspect and monitor schools to ensure compliance, the government announced via press release.A working group was convened in October 2018 of parents, teachers and experts to advise government on drafting new guidelines for the use of seclusion rooms in schools. After meeting before the holidays, the group suggested that guidelines were not enough. Eggen signed a ministerial order for the change on Feb. 28, 2019 to implement the change.
