Contamination in the Strathcona neighbourhood has prompted Todd Cleaners to move out of its 99 Street location amid a dispute with a nearby tower development and an old gas station site over who’s responsible for the cleanup. In a letter to the dry-cleaner’s landlord, Alberta Environment and Parks contends that environmental reports have found tetracloroethane contamination in surrounding properties that allegedly came from Todd Cleaners.Tetrachloroethylne, also known as perchloroethene (PERC), is a tightly regulated chemical used in dry cleaning.Ali Eldin, who had been operating Todd Cleaners for the past 11 years, said he has moved because of the resulting cleanup. He closed the store in January, letting customers know they can instead use any of his First Class Cleaners locations.Eldin said he no longer uses the chemicals in question at any of his locations.Bateman Properties, meanwhile, is developing two apartment towers across the street from the former dry cleaning location.Spokesman Mike Bateman said his team hired outside experts to complete an assessment on the tower property and they discovered contamination both on and around tower property.Bateman said his company has a plan to remove all contamination found on its land.Devon Estates Ltd., the owner of an adjacent gas station that shut down in 2001, is currently suing Todd Holdings Ltd. — the landlord of Todd Cleaners — Bateman Properties and First Class Cleaners for $4 million in cleanup and future prevention costs.A spokesperson for Devon Estates declined to comment as the matter is before the courts.Bateman acknowledged there was a laundromat on his company’s property in the 1960s but said the firm is confident that assessments of the contamination proves his company isn’t to blame for any Devon Estates contamination.Alberta Environment said current remediation progress and timelines in the area have been sealed as part of the court case.Representatives from Todd Holdings Ltd. declined to comment.
