Owen Sound police are looking for the culprits in a “sleight-of-hand” theft of a debit card and subsequent foiled attempt to use it to buy gift cards Tuesday.A 67-year-old woman reported to police that she was the victim of a scheme which played out at a debit machine at a local business, a city news release.She believes an unknown woman was watching her enter her personal identification number into the machine. Outside the store, a man approached her and insisted she’d dropped a $10 and $20 bill and should put it in her wallet, which he started touching.The man is believed to have removed the woman’s debit card from the front of the wallet. The card was used to withdraw $980 at a TD bank machine, then used again at a bank to withdraw $974.43 to purchase $700 in American cash.Later Tuesday police issued a second release which said someone matching the male suspect’s description had tried to use a debit card, who fled when asked for identification. He’d tried to buy two VISA gift cards at a local business at 4:50 p.m.Police have two suspects but only released a description of the man they’re looking for.He is a 55- to 60-year-old non-Caucasian man, believed to have an accent. He’s 5’ 7’’ tall, 165 pounds of medium build, with dark hair, dark-rimmed glasses, a black windbreaker jacket with no logo, black baggy pants.
