A man was taken to hospital Thursday night in Vancouver after becoming trapped in the basement of a townhouse on fire.

One man is in hospital after being rescued from a townhouse fire in Vancouver Thursday night.Vancouver Fire and Rescue assistant chief Steve Duncan says firefighters were called to the blaze shortly after 7 p.m. on Blake Street in the Champlain Heights neighbourhood.Duncan says the fire started in the basement and quickly burned up the stairs, causing the man to become trapped in the basement.Firefighters worked to put out the flames and rescued the man. He was treated by paramedics and transported to hospital in unknown condition.“Firefighters worked really hard to get the man out of the house. He was really fortunate to get out,” said Duncan.Duncan says a dog, also trapped in the house, died in the fire. No one else was in the townhouse and no firefighters were injured.The cause of the blaze is unknown and under firstname.lastname@example.org
