High winds whipped across Metro Vancouver Saturday, disrupting travel on B.C. Ferries and forcing BC Stadium staff to close the roof for a Whitecaps FC match.Environment Canada posted an alert early in the morning, saying wind gusts of up to 80 km/h were expected in the region. The wind was expected to die down overnight.The special weather alert warned that power outages and downed trees were possible.On Saturday afternoon, B.C. Ferries said the Spirit of Vancouver Island from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay was operating more than an hour behind schedule because of the adverse weather.The high winds also forced officials to close the roof of BC Place Stadium for the Whitecaps FC game Saturday.BC Place operations staff determine whether to open or close the roof based on weather conditions. According to the stadium’s website the roof takes approximately 20 minutes to open or close.
