The excitement is spilling from the barn to the track at Century Mile near Edmonton as the first race approaches. Trainers are exercising their horses, each animal galloping a bit longer during each training session. Jockeys are visualizing each turn, committing the dream of being first over the line to memory. The stakes are real, the speed is real and the chance to be written into the annals of horse racing in Alberta is real.Century Mile opened its doors on April 1, 2019 and it effectively replaces Northlands Park. The latter racetrack’s history of hosting thoroughbred and standardbred harness races runs back to 1900. The track received upgrades in 1995 and 2005 but was closed for good on Jan. 31, 2019. The first race on the new mile track is set for Sunday, April 28 at 1:45 p.m.
