The Township of Whitewater Region is the latest municipality in Renfrew County to declare a state of emergency because of rising flood waters. It joins Horton and McNab/Braeside which have already declared emergencies.
WHITEWATER REGION – The township has declared a state of emergency due to flooding along the Ottawa River and other waterways in Whitewater Region. The declaration was made under the Emergency Management and Protection Act, according to a release issued late Thursday night. The Township’s Municipal Emergency Control Group met twice on Thursday to review the current flooding situation prior to Mayor Mike Moore making the declaration.Rising water levels pose an ongoing threat to the property, health and safety of residents. Flood levels are currently forecasted to exceed the historic levels seen in 2017. Additional significant rainfall is forecasted in the next 48 hours. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has issued a flood warning for Renfrew County. Those Whitewater Region residents requiring sand bags can attend the Westmeath public works yard at 1798 Westmeath Rd. Sand has also been deposited in multiple locations. Due to limited supplies, we ask that residents only take sand that is needed to protect their residences. Please inform the township if additional sand or bags are needed, which will be replenished when possible. Residents are responsible for own placement and removal of bags and should not overload vehicles. For safety, all residents should monitor weather conditions, check for updated messages and exercise caution near fast-moving water. Residents should take appropriate precautions to protect their property. The Township is monitoring the situation closely and will provide additional information from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry as well as the Ottawa River Regulating Planning Board, as it becomes available.Regular Township services may be affected as municipal resources are deployed to deal with the flooding emergency. The townships of Horton and McNab/Braeside have also declared states of emergency within the municipalities.Information and resources: County of Renfrew Flood Info: http://www.countyofrenfrew.on.ca/_documents/emergency/management/flood-prep-recovery.pdf Ottawa River Level: www.ottawariver.ca Road Closures: www.municipal511.ca Emergency Management Ontario: www.emergencymanagementontario.ca/english/beprepared/beprepared.html Government of Canada Flood Ready: www.canada.ca/en/campaign/flood-ready.html
