The Village of Rycroft could soon have an easier time catching the latest flicks as Rycroft Hotel has submitted an application to add a one-screen movie theatre with 60 seats.Owner Sheldon Rice explained that this was the next best step for making Rycroft Hotel more of a “family-oriented business.”“Since I moved to Rycroft and took over the Rycroft Hotel, we discovered that there was a lot of dead space that was being heated for no good reason,” Rice said. “And since I’ve took over the business, I’ve been coming up with various creative ideas to generate multiple streams of revenue and the theme I’ve decided to go with is anything family-based.”Rycroft Hotel is currently one of three private businesses operating along the village’s main street. Along with renovating its rooms, the hotel has opened a licenced restaurant that minors are allowed in and a convenience store that caters towards children.“The only convenience stores around Rycroft are out on the highway and there’s a set of railway tracks there and kids are obviously not allowed to cross those tracks, so kids can’t even walk over to the convenience store to get an ice cream,” Rice said. “We felt it would be more safer and obviously better for the local kids of Rycroft if we set up a convenience store right here in town, nice and close to where the families lived.”The movie theatre would offer new releases and 3D movies. According to Rice, the convenience store would act as a concession stand.“I just purchased a popcorn maker, so we will have everything that a movie theatre would have before the movie theatre even gets built,” Rice said. While the hotel aims to have a 60-seat, one-screen theatre, Rice noted this may change depending on what requirements the building permit imposes. He added that a timeline for the project would depend on the application process.“I’m kind of at the mercy of others right now but we are under application for it, so hopefully not too long,” Rice said.
