OAKLAND — The A’s ran their winning streak to nine games Sunday with a 7-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners, the last team to beat them.
The A’s streak might be 10 if not for the rain that caused suspension of their May 19 game in Detroit. The A’s were leading 5-3 in the seventh inning; the game will be completed Sept. 6.
Nine wins or 10, the A’s haven’t lost since May 14, a 4-3 defeat at Seattle.
Matt Chapman continued his hot streak, blasting a two-run, opposite field homer off Mike Leake to give the A’s an early 2-0 lead. Chapman’s 13th home run gave him the team lead over Khris Davis, who has been injured most the month. Chapman shares the team lead in RBI (31) with Josh Phegley, more remarkable given that Phegley has 78 fewer at-bats. Phegley had three RBI Sunday, hitting a homer and two-run double, both on full-count pitches with two out.
Brett Anderson (6-3) pitched into the seventh inning, allowing only a home run to Jay Bruce.
The A’s outscored the Mariners 19-8 this series and will try to make it a 10-game win streak– officially — Monday night when the Los Angeles Angels visit.
