The University of Windsor installed its first female chancellor Tuesday — Mary Jo Haddad, a Windsor native and U of W nursing grad who once held one of the most prominent roles in Canadian health care as president and CEO of the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.Haddad, who retired from SickKids in 2014, is also a past recipient of a 2005 honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the university.She became the school’s eighth chancellor during morning session of convocation for graduating students on Tuesday.As chancellor, Dr. Haddad will serve as the formal head of the university and confer all degrees and diplomas on behalf of the university’s senate. The chancellor also represents the university in an official capacity at external functions.

Her appointment follows the announcement last August that Ed Lumley was stepping down as chancellor after 13 years.Nearly 3,900 graduates are receiving degrees at U of W’s 111th Convocation, held in eight sessions at the St. Denis Centre this week.Lumley is one of six people receiving honourary degrees “who have made outstanding contributions to politics, science, business, the arts, law, and public service,” according to a university release.The other recipients are: biology researcher, community booster and professor emeritus Dr. Datta Pillay, economist Dr. Sherry Cooper, Canadian actor Tom McCamus, Ontario Securities Commission chair and CEO Maureen Jensen, and Agnest Di Leonardi, a women’s leadership advocate who is general counsel for Sym-Tech Dealer Services.
