A man, who set himself on fire near the White House Wednesday afternoon, died.
U.S. Park Police identified him Thursday morning as Arnav Gupta of Bethesda, Maryland.
Gupta died Wednesday evening, police said.
Around 12:25 p.m. Wednesday, U.S. Park Police said officers responded to a report of a man on fire on the Ellipse, near 15th Street and Constitution Avenue.
The fire on the man was extinguished, and he was taken to a hospital, park police said.
A helicopter and multiple D.C. Fire trucks responded within minutes as the person was hit with extinguishers.
Witnesses told CNBC that the man was running before being consumed by flames.
Police spokesman Sgt. Eduardo Delgado said on Wednesday police had not identified a motive.
Delgado said police are working to determine what type of accelerant was used and whether the man parked his car nearby.
The case has been turned over to the D.C. police department.
