Maxime Bernier, leader of the People’s Party of Canada, will make a stop in Grande Prairie for a political rally in early July as the federal election creeps closer.The rally takes place at the Pomeroy Hotel and Conference Centre Grande Prairie from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 10.A rally is also scheduled for Fort McMurray two days prior and Sherwood Park the day before, while People’s Party candidates are expected to be announced in Calgary and St. Albert.Doug Burchill is the current People’s Party candidate for Grande Prairie-Mackenzie.Bernier was one of the contenders during the 2017 leadership race for the Conservative Party of Canada. After losing to Andrew Scheer, he left the conservatives and started his own party. He is currently serves as a member of Parliament for the Beauce riding in Quebec.The People’s Party election platform includes items such as reducing the total amount of equalization payments, replacing the Firearms Act, withdrawing from the Paris Accord, getting rid of interprovincial trade barriers, promoting freedom of expression and phasing out the supple management system for dairy, poultry and egg.The 2019 Canadian federal election is scheduled to take place on or before Oct. 21.
