Edmonton Oilers @EdmontonOilersThe #Oilers have placed defenceman Andrej Sekera on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a buyout.Mark Spector @SportsnetSpecSekera buy out coming when it does hints that Holland has the extra money already spent on a UFA or two. Should be an interesting day tmw.Oilers fan Ryan Donaldson @Maddawg81Different GM still dumb.Sean@OilersFanSeanWow I feel this is one of the biggest mistakes the #Oilers have made, and that’s saying something. The guy had some bad luck, but he came back strong. Would have been a great steadying factor and strong leader for the young kids.Oilers fan Jaret Pro @JaretProUnfortunately with his recent injury history the answer has to be yes, can’t afford to have cap space sitting on the LTIR.Oilers fan the codester@Pigpen1973While I’m not a fan of buying out Sekera, let’s have a little faith that Ken Holland has a bigger plan in mind. So tired of fans, and media, ripping on the “new” regime when they haven’t even had a chance yet.Hockey blogger Alex Thomas @Alex_Thomas14The #Oilers have bought out D Andrej Sekera. Opens up significant cap space for 2019-20. However, I think this is a mistake. Kris Russell should be the guy sent out. Sekera is a much better player. Believe this move will haunt Edmonton. Bad decision by Ken Holland.Ryan Rishaug @TSNRyanRishaugSounds like Connolly is not likely to land in Edmonton. Will be interesting to see who else they target with some extra cap space after the Sekera buyout.Gord Miller @GMillerTSNAn NHL GM on what he’s trying to accomplish today: “I’m trying to move out bad contracts so I can give out some more tomorrow.”Oilers Rebuild 4.0? @Josephk90Ryan dzingel or mats Zuccarello are still very good options for the Oilers. The key for me is to not give them term. Overpay them if you want to don’t give them more than three years.Jim Matheson @NHLbyMattySekera an excellent pro and somebody like Carolina should get him for cheap…So Edm has money to sign Chiasson if they desire. Nurse and Russell a D pairing with Benning, Jones and Persson in 5-6-7 holes for nowOilers fan orange desk @desk_orangeI think Sekera brings enough value that if you couldn’t trade him, just keep him. He’s one of their only 2 puck moving Dmen.. getting an extra 3M in cap isnt going to push them over the top this yearGilRoyTX @GilroyTXPotential teams know they could get them for only ~$1M/yr after buyout versus having to pay much more with Oilers covering only a portion of salary.Oilers fan speeds@hockeysymposiumSeems interesting to me that EDM couldn’t have found a home for Sekera with 50% retained once his NMC turned into a trade list tomorrow – would be cheaper financially, create almost as much cap room, and only last 2 years?…Does the Sekera buyout reduce the chances that EDM moves Benning? Or too many moving parts right now to really be able to read the tea leaves, with UFA starting so soon?Hockey writer Jonathan Willis of The AthleticIt’s legitimate to question Holland’s ability to get trades done, given how rarely he made player-for-player deals in Detroit. It’s been a long-standing critique of his approach… The critique is that lots of GMs find a way to make player-for-player deals work, and for whatever reason for years Holland hasn’t been able to execute those same sorts of trades. It was a common refrain from fans and pundits in Detroit… That is of course not to say there was necessarily a Sekera trade out there.
