This Saturday’s Billy Bishop Heritage Fest will be a chance to honour area veterans, learn more about local heritage groups and enjoy food, games and other activities, organizers say.The event is set to take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Billy Bishop Home: Museum, Archives & National Historic Site on 3rd Avenue West in Owen Sound.“We wanted to combine our Victorian Ice Cream Social and Veterans’ Commemoration ceremony into one big Billy Bishop Heritage festival that celebrates all the heritage around the community,” curator Emily Jolliffe said in an interview Thursday.“We wanted to get as many organizations and groups out as possible so the community can see all the great things we have in this area.”The festival is to begin with the Veterans’ Commemoration ceremony at 11 a.m. in the museum’s backyard garden. All veterans will be honoured during the ceremony, which will also feature the local Royal Canadian Legion Colour Party, a moment of silence and comments from dignitaries.A barbecue will follow at noon, with hamburgers and hotdogs on the grill as well as chips, beverages, cake and Chapman’s ice cream available. The cost for the barbecue is $5 and free for veterans.Organizations like the Grey-Bruce branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, Grey Bruce Chinese Heritage & Culture Association, Grey Roots and Community Waterfront Heritage Centre will have displays at the event. A large private collection of medals and cap badges will also be on view.Historical re-enactors will be part of the event and people can play games like croquet, badminton, bocce ball, ring toss and board games and participate in crafts like bracelet-making and origami. Kids can also get their faces painted. The festival will also include the official opening of the travelling exhibit “Ontario’s Movie Theatres,” which includes profiles on some of Owen Sound’s past and present theatres.Billy Bishop Heritage Fest was originally supposed to take place June 15, but the museum decided a few days prior to postpone the event due to a rainy forecast for the day.The new July 27 date was scheduled in mid-June.
