Northern Ireland golfer Darren Clarke is well known on the tour for his fun-loving personality. And Calgarians will now get the chance to “have drinks with Darren” when he comes to Calgary for the Shaw Charity Classic, Aug. 28 to Sept. 1.Golf fans can rub elbows with the 2011 British Open champion at a pub night at Ceili’s Pub (351 4th Ave. S.W.) on Aug. 29. Calgary was just my second week on the PGA Tour Champions last year and it was unbelievable,” said Clarke. “It was probably the best atmosphere we have on tour, incredible crowds, a fantastic golf course and great people. And for sure we even found one or two great bars as well.”Clarke became eligible to play on the Champions Tour when he turned 50 last August. He won 14 times on the European Tour and three times on the PGA Tour. Captain of the 2016 European Ryder Cup Team, Clarke was a member of five consecutive Ryder Cup squads between 1997 and 2006 — four times on the winning side.He has two, top-five finishes this year.“These guys are still very competitive. They are lights out every week so it is tough to win on this tour as it is at any level,” said Clarke. “The nerves are the same, but I’m still trying to get the first victory out here, and hopefully it will be in front of the awesome fans in Calgary.
