What began as involvement on the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School in Petawawa turned into a 25-year tenure as an Renfrew County Catholic District School Board (RCCDSB) trustee for current board chairman Dave Howard. 2019 marks his 25th anniversary year.“I had a great team of parents who fundraised, applied for grants and delivered a great deal to the school community of the day. I believe it was this experience that gave me the drive to do what I continue to do today for the kids in our charge,” Howard said about his continuing commitment. “I believe that Catholic Education is an integral part of the education system in Ontario and I will continue to be a strong advocate for its continuance.”Howard represents four RCCDSB schools located in the municipalities of the Town of Deep River, the Town of Laurentian Hills, Head Clara & Maria Township and the Town of Petawawa.Since becoming a trustee in 1994, Howard has held the position of board chairman twice, from 2002-2005 and 2016 to the present. He has also been the board’s vice-chairman and has chaired several committees including Business and Corporate Services and the Joint Transportation Governance Committee.Howard noted there have been many highlights over his years of service with his being elected as chairman of the board on two separate occasions an honour and a privilege.Another highlight was the commissioning of the Board Prayer in 2003.“It pleases me each time we pray it throughout our system at meetings to this day,” Howard said.He is also proud that two new schools were built in Petawawa during his time on the board.Howard says he is grateful to have worked with four directors of education, several supervisory officers, and colleagues both past and present.“You have all contributed to my success and you have made my journey a very pleasing and memorable one,” he said.As well, he expressed gratitude to his wife Jane, daughters Dana and Tricia, and his grandchildren, “for sharing their time to allow me the time to perform my duties as a trustee.”“It has been a wonderful 25 years and I look forward to the next.
