Charges laid in death of Saskatoon’s ninth homicide of 2019

A 37-year-old Saskatoon man is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Richard Fernuk earlier this month.According to a police news release, officers with the major crimes unit arrested the Leo Roy Daniels on Wednesday. He is also charged with robbery and unlawful confinement.Daniels appeared in Saskatoon provincial court Thursday afternoon wearing a white jumpsuit and looking visibly disoriented. When his charges were read, Daniels asked if they were all from the same date.Fernuck’s family was present in court but declined to comment.According to police, Fernuk called 9-1-1 around 11 p.m. on Aug. 1 because he was experiencing chest pains from a pre-existing heart condition. Paramedics took Fernuk to St. Paul’s Hospital and Fernuk later asked to be voluntarily discharged after he was treated.Officers were sent to check on Fernuk at his apartment at 2224 B St. Charles Ave. on Aug. 3. He was found dead inside.A subsequent autopsy determined Fernuk’s death was a homicide. No information on the cause of his death has been released. Police do not believe the man and Fernuk knew each other. Fernuk’s death was Saskatoon’s ninth homicide of 2019.Daniels’ next appearance in court is set for Aug. 13.Related
