Shoppers at CF Chinook Centre may have noticed a chic, new addition that recently popped up among other high-end retailers in the mall’s unofficial luxury row.Mackage, a Montreal-based outerwear brand seen on celebrities such as the Duchess of Sussex and Gwyneth Paltrow, opened its doors earlier this summer on the main floor near Louis Vuitton and Saks Fifth Avenue. While the 20-year-old brand has long been offered at retailers across Calgary, Chinook’s 1,900-square-foot location — styled with dark floors, bright lights, and snow and ice imagery — is Mackage’s first flagship store to open in Alberta. It’s an exciting milestone for founders Eran Elfassy and Elisa Dahan, who say they have been eyeing Calgary for some time.“Calgary felt like the natural location to continue our store expansion,” Dahan said in a recent email interview.“It’s a city which has been drawing our attention for years now and we couldn’t be happier to finally have a home there. Opening our own store also means that we will have a direct contact with our customers there.”In the early days, Mackage was known for its stylish leather jackets. The brand has now grown to include a variety of outerwear pieces for women, men and children, from down jackets to wool coats, along with hats, handbags and other accessories.“We take you from the city to the mountain. Our collections are weather conscious, sophisticated, sexy, bold and for everyone that has an on-the-go lifestyle,” Dahan said. She said the pieces are meant to be both fashionable and functional, and the materials used in their creation align with the brand’s goal to be sustainable and socially responsible.“Our down is 100 per cent traceable and ethically sourced, and we mandate independent laboratories to ensure the certainty of it,” she added.CF Chinook Centre’s general manager, Paige O’Neill, called Mackage a great brand that resonates with Calgarians.“It’s a great retailer, a great operator and, basically, unique for Calgary in the sense of its own (standalone) store, which is always something we’re looking for, to find those first-market unique clients,” O’Neill said.Mackage’s reach has extended to Hollywood, where stars such as Halle Berry and Gwyneth Paltrow have been spotted donning the brand, the latter even reaching out to do a collaboration. Most recently, the company enjoyed a surge in popularity when the Duchess of Sussex, still Meghan Markle at the time, was spotted wearing a Mackage leather jacket at the Invictus Games in Toronto in 2017, a sporting event created by her now-husband Prince Harry.“Over the years, Mackage was mainly built through word of mouth and our customers were coming back for the quality and craftsmanship of our product,” Dahan said.“Meghan Markle choosing to wear Mackage was an incredible and surreal moment for the brand and for us. It was a complete surprise and the outcome was unbelievable.”The fashion house also has stores in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, New York and New Jersey, with an Edmonton location slated to open later this month. Plans are also underway to expand in the United States, Europe and Asia, Dahan said.
