Inaction by Congress on gun controls favored by a majority of Americans is not just because of NRA contributions. It is a failing GOP that cannot form a majority government based on fair elections because of America’s rapidly changing demographics.
A GOP unwilling to embrace the 21st century needs to institutionalize minority (white?) rule through gerrymandering and disenfranchising segments of the population. The tough talking GOP needs Americans to live in a state of fear and insecurity — generated by demonizing the “other” — to justify their reactionary politics and deflect serious debate on issues impacting American lives.
Whether the “other” are communists, black, brown, LGBT, yellow, Jewish, or Islamic really doesn’t matter. The NRA and white nationalists are just another engine to drive the cycle of fear; and they will get the inaction they need from the GOP whether they pay the piper or not.
