Re: Two area specialists bill OHIP more than $6 million, Anne Jarvis and Trevor Wilhelm, July 18, 2019.I cannot speak for my colleagues but I will tell you from personal experience that medicine is hard. That is not to say that other jobs aren’t equally hard; in the end it isn’t really a competition, but its practice is complex and requires sacrifices in areas they never teach you in medical school. I try to discuss those sacrifices, with residents and clerks whom I teach, so that they have a better chance of finding that balance. While I want them to be skilled healers I also hope that their marriages last, that they are good mothers, fathers and friends, and that they look out for themselves, because if they don’t it is all too easy to break down from the stress and long hours.I don’t know, quite honestly, what a fair income should be for the person who will thread a line up into my coronary vasculature, or reshape my eye, or give me the right sequence of vasopressors, so my heart doesn’t stop, when I’m having an MI. There is real debate to be had here. However, I can tell you that simply publishing how much a physician bills OHIP does not represent what that physician takes home. I can also tell you that, much like the Sunshine List, simply publishing these income numbers, out of context, lacks real substance and enters the arena of public shaming more than it does public education. At the end of the day, the only thing I can tell you, about the people on this list is that they help me and my patients on a daily basis. As a primary care physician I am grateful for them. They are skilled at what they do and what they do is not easy.Dr. Geoff Butler, TecumsehShare Your ViewsSend letters to the editor to firstname.lastname@example.org.
