Here’s what happened while the Montreal Impact lost on the road…again. The Rhinoceros Party of Canada launched its campaign in front of Verdun beach. “Rhino” Jacques Bélanger, the party’s candidate for Lasalle—Émard—Verdun was handing out hotdogs, handshakes and a lot of promises. “We are promising you twice as many things as other parties,” Bélanger said. One of these promises is to transform the Louis-Hippolyte-Lafontaine tunnel into a free carwash. Bélanger said they promise “a higher education to Canadians by building higher schools.” The Rhinos want more green cars on the road including dark green, pale green and fluorescent green cars. In fact, the party wants fluorescent green to be Canada’s national colour. Although the party has ideas that could tempt many citizens, such as a day off after each holiday, the Rhinoceros Party has never managed to elect anyone.Rafael Nadal received a free pass into the Rogers Cup final when Gaël Monfils withdrew with an ankle injury. The action came less than two hours after Monfils upset 10th-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain 6-4,3-6, 7-6 (2) in a quarter-final that was 21 hours in the making. Nadal will face Daniil Medvedev, who defeated fellow Russian Karen Khachanov in the other semifinal. The weatherman didn’t do Monfils any favours. His quarter-final match against Agut was originally scheduled for Friday night, but a thunderstorm forced organizers to suspend play with Monfils holding a 30-0 lead in the first game. Organizers held out hope they would able to complete the match Friday night but, with no sign of clearing skies, they abandoned the session at 10:28 p.m. and scheduled the resumption of the match for 1 p.m. Saturday. Light showers put an end to that plan and play didn’t resume until 3:20. “I was unfortunate in March, a little bit again in July,” Monfils said. “Maybe it was a safest decision not to play tonight.”A falling bear destroyed a patrol car in California. The Associated Press reports that a sheriff’s deputy was answering a call when the bear fell or jumped onto his car, which rolled and caught on fire. The car was destroyed, but the deputy escaped largely unscathed. The California Department of Transportation told the Associated Press “the bear also fled the scene.”
