The RCMP are warning the public about false advertising online after a post popped up on Kijiji offering to sell the aluminum hunter’s boat found in Gillam, Man. near the bodies of triple murder suspects Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky. For $5,000, someone can buy the “practically brand new 14′ Jon Boat,” the ad states.“No motor ever mounted only been paddled a few kilometers. No ownership as original owner is currently unavailable and it was not provided to me,” reads the ad that includes an RCMP photo of the flat-bottomed hunter’s boat.“Asking $5000 due to its “celebrity status”. No trailer or motor. Serious inquiries only.”The RCMP says the photo in the ad was taken from their Twitter account.“We are aware of the ad and can confirm that we still have this boat in our possession,” Sgt. Paul Manaigre said.“This is a good reminder for those to be cautious when shopping online as not all ads are what they claim to be.”
An ad on Kijiji appears to offer the boat allegedly used by the triple murder suspects from B.C. for $5,000.
The notice was posted on Aug. 8, the day after Manitoba RCMP announced they were confident they found the bodies of McLeod and Schmegelsky near the shoreline of the Nelson River, only about a kilometre away from items connected to the fugitives and the boat.An autopsy was scheduled over the weekend, but the results have not been made public. The ad appears to have been posted from Thompson, Man. and had been seen almost 12,000 times by Monday morning. It’s unclear whether the ad is intended to be a prank or to dupe people into paying money for the boat potentially used by the alleged teen killers, but the ad has since been removed from Kijiji.McLeod, 19 and Schmegelsky, whose 19th birthday was on Aug. 4, from Port Alberni, B.C., were facing a second-degree murder charge in the death of Leonard Dyck, a university lecturer from Vancouver. Dyck’s body was discovered along a highway pullout two kilometres south of Dease Lake, B.C., on July 19.The pair were also suspects in the shooting deaths of American tourist Chynna Deese and her Australian boyfriend, Lucas Fowler. Their bodies were found along a highway near Liard Hot Springs, B.C. on July 15.• Email: firstname.lastname@example.org | Twitter: bobbyhristova
