Actress Kate Mara is currently in Calgary shooting a new FX limited series about a young teacher having an affair with her student.A Teacher, based on Hannah Fiddell’s 2013 feature film of the same name, began shooting in Calgary on Monday. On Tuesday, the production was filming at Family Foods at the Mayland Shopping Centre.The Emmy-nominated actress rose to fame thanks to roles in House of Cards, Pose and 24. She plays Claire, a popular high-school teacher in suburban Texas. Nick Robinson, who recently starred in Love, Simon, plays the “all-American” high school senior she falls for. Lindsay Burdge and Will Brittain played the roles in the original film.Fiddell will also direct the 10-part series. Actor Jason Bateman is among the executive producers of the series, which FX describes as exploring “the story behind the mugshot of a female high school teacher caught in an affair with her male student, revealing the complexities and consequences of these illegal relationships.”

FX is also the studio behind Fargo, which filmed its first three seasons in Calgary but is moving production to Chicago for its fourth.Robinson starred in the 2015 blockbuster Jurassic World before rising to fame as the lead in 2018’s comedy-drama Love, Simon.Mara earned an Emmy nomination in 2014 for her work in the first season of the Netflix political thriller House of Cards. She recently appeared in FX shows such as Pose and American Horror Story and has starred in films such as The Martian, Fantastic Four and 127 Hours.She is also no stranger to shooting in Alberta. She had a small, pre-stardom role in the TV series Everwood, which shot its pilot in Alberta. She also played Heath Ledger’s daughter, despite being only four years younger than him at the time, in the Alberta-shot Oscar-winning 2005 drama Brokeback Mountain.According to ACTRA Alberta’s website, A Teacher will be shooting in Calgary and surrounding areas until Oct. 11. An air date has not been released.
